For utility companies in the business of selling power, demand can, on occasion, exceed capacity making operations inefficient. In response, the International Window Film Association (IWFA), is encouraging utilities to be aware of the energy savings benefits of professionally installed window film while educating their customers on the returns.
Up to one-third of heating and cooling costs can be lost through inefficient windows, and many utility customers have older, less efficient single pane windows in their buildings. Once installed, window film may offer year-round savings of about five to 10 percent of the buildings’ total energy bill. New window films block 40-60 percent of all energy being lost through glass in winter and may cut cooling costs by 30 percent.
“Professionally installed energy control window film is a highly effective way to save energy,” said Darrell Smith, executive director of the IWFA. “Windows can allow in less than 25 percent of solar energy with window film installed, versus allowing in 90 percent without it. In addition, for commercial buildings, window film can deliver seven times the energy saving benefits per dollar spent compared with installing replacement windows.”
As utilities and the commissions that oversee them are often interested in reaping the cost benefits of power conservation, encouraging customers to have a professional installation of window film can be a wise suggestion. There may also be Federal, state or local incentive programs for which installed window film may qualify.

<![CDATA[Prevent Turf Burn!!]]>Tue, 13 Sep 2016 03:02:16 GMThttp://westcoastcustomtint.com/blog/prevent-turf-burn
HOW TO STOP TURF BURNING AND DISCOLORATION.... Most states are experiencing a water shortage. Many residents are being asked to reduce their water consumption. More often than not, residents are turning towards artificial grass and flowers. Artificial grass, also known as turf dramatically reduces the amount of water used to maintain a beautiful landscaped yard. Turf is much easier to maintain. There is no need to water it, mow it, or fertilize it. The only possible downfall, is high temperatures can potentially melt the turf. If this is a problem you are experiencing,West Coast Custom Tint has the solution for you!

We have a couple of solutions:

The first is a matte frost and is perfect in situations where visibility is not important. This film is applied to the exterior of the window and provides total privacy both looking in and out. Although this is a privacy film, it still allows 73% of natural light into your space and provides 99.9% UV protection.

The second option would be window screens that cover both exterior panes of glass. These screens provide visibility both in and out of the window.

Adding frost window film or window screens to your windows that face your turf will prevent burning and discoloration. Without these, the reflection from energy efficient windows can magnify the sun, which causes your turf to melt and burn, which can be very costly!

We found an informative article from a turf installation company, they too recommend window screens or window film as a solution. Check it out here....http://www.installitdirect.com/blog/energy-efficient-windows-artificial-grass/ ]]>

<![CDATA[Reduce the damaging effect of FADING!]]>Sat, 07 May 2016 01:56:43 GMThttp://westcoastcustomtint.com/blog/reduce-the-damaging-effect-of-fadingFading is so subtle that it sneaks up on you; a little fading each day and once you move a chair or rug, it’s very costly to repair. Fading is caused by a number of factors but the damaging effects can be controlled. The largest single cause of fading is ultraviolet rays. Solar window films block 99% of ultraviolet rays virtually eliminating damage to the interior of your home.

Some of the things that can be damaged by the sun’s rays are hard-wood floors, wood cabinets, carpet, decorator rugs, upholstered furniture, paintings, photographs, draperies, and even your child’s artwork.
You spend a lot of time and money decorating your home and solar window film can help keep that investment looking new!

<![CDATA[Why Use Window Film?]]>Fri, 06 May 2016 22:55:10 GMThttp://westcoastcustomtint.com/blog/why-use-window-filmSkin Cancer Foundation
Published on November 22, 2012
Ultraviolet radiation can travel through car and home windows, where it can contribute to the daily accumulation of sun exposure that can lead to skin cancer and photoaging. UV-blocking films can not only protect you against this exposure, but can offer other benefits as well.
Ultraviolet rays (UVR) are sneaky. Not only can they cause skin cancer and visible signs of aging, they're also very good at finding you. They can bounce off water, off sand, and they can penetrate glass. Which means that even if you're inside your car or house, if you're sitting next to a window with sunlight streaming in, you're at risk for UV damage.

Fortunately, the "window film" revolution is gaining momentum. It began with automobiles in the 1990's. Research showed that drivers with left-hand drive developed more skin damage on the left side of their bodies, while those with right-hand drive developed more damage on the right. The reason? UVR streaming through the driver-side windows. "Long-time drivers are found to have rougher, more pigmented skin with greater solar damage on their driver's side," noted Albert Kligman, MD, PhD, emeritus professor of dermatology, University of Pennsylvania Medical School, Philadelphia.
All of a car's windows filter out the sun's short-wave, UVB rays -all glass will filter UVB, in fact - but only the windshield in cars comes partially treated against the sun's UVA rays. However, for several years in all 50 states, transparent UVA-filtering film has been available for vehicles' side and back window glass. It screens out almost 100 percent of UVB and UVA, without reducing visibility.
And now, UVA-protective film has moved indoors big-time. Residential and commercial films come in flat sheets, in varied tints, cutting down glare by more than half while allowing 30-80 percent of visible light to get through, depending on the customer's wants. Like automobile film, they block out up to 99.9 percent of UVR. This helps prevent not only sunburn, but also the brief daily UV exposures that cumulatively accelerate skin aging and multiply the risk of skin cancer. In addition, the film can be lifesavers for people with diseases involving dangerous photosensitivity, such as xeroderma pigmentosum and lupus.
Along with clear health benefits, window film offers other advantages:
 • In hot weather, it cuts down heat within the home, which can reduce air conditioning expenses.
 • In cold weather, it reflects interior heat back into the house, reducing heating costs.
 • It helps keep sunshine from fading car upholstery and home furnishings.
 • Some new types of "safety" film help hold residential and commercial glass in place if shattered. Several times thicker than the standard sun-protective film, it can greatly reduce the chances of break-ins, property damage, and even personal injury that can result from broken glass.

<![CDATA[Window Film - Sun Protection for your Health & Home]]>Fri, 06 May 2016 22:54:57 GMThttp://westcoastcustomtint.com/blog/window-film-sun-protection-for-your-health-homeSkin Cancer Foundation
Published on November 22, 2013

While it’s understood that taking sun safety precautions is important outside, few people realize they can sustain sun damage indoors, too. While both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the sun can harm the skin and lead to skin cancers, UVB is effectively blocked by glass. However, at least 50 percent of UVA rays can pass through windows. Window film is an increasingly effective solution, offering substantial indoor protection by blocking up to 99.9 percent of UVA radiation. Although they are less intense than UVB, UVA rays are 30 to 50 times more prevalent and are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year. Window film can help prevent harmful UVA rays from damaging both your skin and your belongings.
“To see the damage that untreated glass can do, take a close look at the furnishings in your home that are hit by direct sunlight,” says Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “If the sun has faded the color of your sofa, it can just as easily damage your skin when you sit there.”
Available in varied tints, residential and commercial window films can also cut down glare by more than half while allowing 30-80 percent of visible light to get through, depending on the customer's needs. The benefits of installing window film go beyond protecting one’s skin and household items, as it also can reduce energy costs. In hot weather, window film cuts down heat within the home and in cold weather it reflects interior heat back into the home. Additionally, some new types of "safety" film help hold residential and commercial glass in place if shattered. Several times thicker than the standard sun-protective film, it can greatly reduce the chances of break-ins, property damage, and even personal injury that can result from broken glass.
About 85 percent of melanomas and 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to UV radiation. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that everyone adopt a complete year-round sun protection regimen that includes seeking shade, covering up with clothing, wearing a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, and using broad spectrum sunscreen every day.
The Skin Cancer Foundation has awarded its Seal of Recommendation to window films manufactured by several different brands, including 3M, Nexfil, Solar Gard and Panorama, and Solutia Performance Films. Products granted the Seal of Recommendation have been proven to provide safe and effective UV radiation protection. <![CDATA[Cataracts & Ultra Violet Light]]>Fri, 06 May 2016 22:54:39 GMThttp://westcoastcustomtint.com/blog/may-06th-2016The march of time does more than simply slow a person down. As a person matures with age vision can become a problem. Cataracts forming over the lens of the eye can cause vision to become cloudy and require surgery for these obstacles to be removed. Ultraviolet light is a primary culprit in the formation of cataracts, and senior citizens are advised to have sunglasses with them when they go outdoors to obstruct these damaging rays. It’s all part of sensible healthcare prevention.

That’s good advice but there still remains a problem. Those ultraviolet rays that have the greatest potential of causing cataracts are known as UVA rays. The Environmental Protection Agency reports a UV Index every day to warn people of high levels of ultraviolet rays. Naturally, people wear sunglasses to minimize the exposure of their eyes to the sun but a challenge occurs when normal living behavior puts a person at risk indoors. Modern technologies are making it increasingly more convenient for people to spend even longer periods of time in their house. Ultraviolet lights rays can pass through unprotected glass and the glare can have a serious impact on a person’s eyes. This means that it’s very possible for a person to be exposed to UVA rays and the potential formation of cataracts even inside of the home. The consequence is that senior citizens are possibly exposed to damaging ultraviolet rays even though they feel they are perfectly safe.
Window film can be a very effective deterrent to ultraviolet rays. It is estimated that good window film will block as much as 99 % of ultraviolet rays, which is the same degree of protection recommended for sunglasses, without significantly decreasing the light coming in. The protection that this gives to senior citizens cannot be understated. The window film acts like the protective shielding of sunglasses. With window film on the glass, senior citizens can spend more of their time in the comfort of their home without running major risks with their sight.
Protection is extremely important after a person has undergone cataract surgery, even to the point of always wearing sunglasses outdoors during the period of recovery. Window film allows this vision protection to continue when the recuperating patient is inside. It serves to reduce glare and also protects the surface of the eyes that are still adjusting to better vision. Perhaps the best way to imagine window film is if windows were large sunglasses. The same kind of protection afforded by those totally fashionable shades is given by the film. Yes, it’s sad to say window film is probably not going to make anybody look like a fashionista. Yet what it will do is allow a person to look out at the beautiful world without having that vision obstructed by cataracts.
